How We Rate Tools

A published framework for comparing products without letting affiliate commission determine the result.

Trust-A-Tool Score

The planned Trust-A-Tool Score uses a 0–100 scale. It is a comparison aid, not a claim that one tool is best for every person or every job. Different use cases can justify different choices.

Job Fit & Performance — 30%

How well verified capabilities and specifications fit the intended use.

Value — 25%

Useful capability and included equipment relative to current price and comparable options.

Build, Warranty & Support — 20%

Documented warranty/support, serviceability and available durability evidence.

Usability — 15%

Ergonomics, size, weight, controls, setup and workflow considerations relevant to the tool type.

Platform & Ownership — 10%

Consumables, accessories, batteries/software where relevant, availability and likely ongoing ownership costs.

How the calculation works

Each factor receives an evidence-based score from 0–100. The overall score is the weighted sum of those factor scores. For example, Job Fit & Performance contributes 30% of the total and Value contributes 25%.

Evidence rules

We will use documented specifications, warranty/support information, authorized merchant or manufacturer information, and other relevant evidence. A numerical score will not be marked final until required evidence is present. Material price, specification or warranty changes can trigger a review.

Affiliate independence

Affiliate commission rate is not a scoring factor. A merchant paying a higher commission does not receive additional scoring points.

Status: Version 1.0 is the scoring framework we will use when real product evaluations begin. No placeholder or fabricated product receives an official score.
